Muitos podem não saber quem é Robert “Bob” Baker, mas se eu me referir ao lutador russo de karate que enfrenta Chen Zhen (Bruce Lee) nas cenas finais de Fists of Fury (A Fúria do Dragão), certamente se lembrarão daquele sujeito de poucas palavras, mal encarado, de bigode e cabelos crespos ruivos, dotado de uma força descomunal, chamado Petrov.
O desfecho do combate: Chute lateral no rosto e uma cutilada mortal.
Depois dessa participação de Bob Baker na Fúria do Dragão, nunca mais se ouviu falar dele em filmes (pelo menos relevantes) ou em algum tipo de evento representativo de artes marciais.
Ao contrário dos lutadores profissionais, campeões de Karate e mestres de artes marciais convidados por Bruce lee para participarem de seus filmes como Bob Wall, Chuck Norris, Jim Kelly, Whang In-Shik, Ji Han Jae, Shih Kien e Bolo Yeung, aparentemente o misterioso Bob Baker não tinha “carta de apresentação” que justificasse sua presença naquele filme. Será que ele teria sido aleatoriamente escolhido por Bruce Lee simplesmente pelo seu visual caucasiano carrancudo?
O duelo de Petrov com Chen Zhen foi muito interessante, pois Bruce pôde demonstrar um pouco de sua versatilidade para luta, usando técnicas de boxe ocidental e Jeet Kune Do, chegando até apelar para uma mordida salvadora na perna do adversário. Ou seja, ele queria na obra teorizar que um lutador deveria aprimorar nos treinamentos não apenas os golpes, mas também a capacidade de explorar a sua agressividade, operando instintos e improvisações e fazendo uma leitura apurada do oponente para conseguir supera-lo. Isso só se faz com uma entrega total nos treinamentos, de acordo com Bruce – e, nesse ponto, era incansável. Antes e depois da internação, mesmo em casa, ele não parava. Alongava-se após ver TV, apoiava-se numa mesa para forçar os músculos da coxa. Chegava a ler um livro segurando-o com uma mão enquanto, na outra, levantava um pequeno alteres. Dizia que não podia deixar de se manter em forma em qualquer ocasião. E completava afirmando que seus braços e pernas trabalhavam como instrumentos de trabalho e não podiam perder a regularidade em exercícios.
O que se sabe de Bob Baker e que no geral todos concordam é que ele era norte-americano, nascido no estado da Califórnia em 18 de maio de 1940. Portanto, era apenas 7 meses mais jovem que Bruce Lee. Antes de conhecer Bruce, ele teria treinado com o famoso professor havaiano de Kempo, Al Dacascos (praticante do sistema de luta Kajukenbo). Logo em seguida começou a treinar Jeet Kune Do sob a supervisão do próprio Bruce Lee e seu amigo James Yimm Lee, em Oakland, na Califórnia, ainda na segunda metade da década de 1960.
Bob Baker foi uma das cobaias de Bruce Lee na demonstração do "soco de uma polegada"
na edição de 1967 do Torneio de Long Beach, na California. Na foto Bruce executa o
famoso soco em uma de suas vítimas voluntárias.
No torneio de Karate em 1967 na cidade de Long Beach, na Califórnia (campeonato tradicional em que Bruce Lee já havia participado em 1964, demonstrando suas extraordinárias condições físicas e técnicas), Bob Baker foi uma das "cobaias" para a exibição do lendário “soco de uma polegada”. Antes de Bruce desferir o soco em seu peito, Bob teria recusado o colchim como protetor para amortecer a pancada. Lee estava em pé de frente a Baker, com os joelhos ligeiramente dobrados, pé direito à frente e punho direito cerca de uma polegada de distância de seu peito. Sem recuar seu braço, Lee socou Bob com tamanho impacto que o fez cair sentado sobre uma cadeira que tinha sido colocado atrás dele. O resultado foi como Bob descreveu: "Eu disse a Bruce não fazer esse tipo de demonstração novamente, porque depois que levei aquele soco, eu tive que ficar em casa sem ter condições de trabalhar por algum tempo... a dor em meu peito era insuportável! "
Não sei ao certo se Bob Baker já estudava Jeet Kune Do em 1967 ou se começou a a praticar a partir desta demonstração em Long Beach. De qualquer maneira ele teria sido considerado (não se sabe por quem) o aluno mais veterano dos tempos de Oakland, só perdendo para James Yim Lee (co-fundador da academia de Oakland com Bruce). Porém, já foi dito que a maioria dos alunos de Lee parecia desconhecer Bob Baker até sua aparição em A Fúria do Dragão de 1972. O que era uma inverdade, pois há registros fotográficos no final dos anos de 1960, de Bob Baker junto a outros alunos de Bruce Lee, como Howard Williams e o próprio James Yimm Lee. Sem dúvida, Bob Baker era um dos mais antigos.
Além de participar de Fists of Fury, Baker apareceu também em diversas convenções servindo de sparring para Bruce Lee em demonstrações para a TV em Hong Kong.
Foi justamente nessa fase da carreira de Bruce Lee, eles desenvolveram uma forte amizade, com Baker se hospedando por alguns meses na casa da família Lee em Kowloon. Bruce na época costumava apresentá-lo como seu “guarda-costas” para a imprensa de Hong Kong. E já que Bruce costumava sofrer muitas provocações de lutadores clássicos ou de de rua que queriam testar suas habilidades quando aparecia em público, Baker até que “quebraria um galho” como guarda-costas, se precisasse.
James Yimm Lee, grande amigo e sócio de Lee, que também foi um grande amigo de Baker, tinha falecido de Câncer em 1972 aos 52 anos e, se não bastasse, Bruce viria a falecer em 1973 de forma ainda não totalmente esclarecida aos 32 anos, o que deixou Baker ainda mais arrasado. Após a morte de Lee, Baker teria deixado Hong Kong rapidamente (a imprensa “marrom” dizia que o motivo seria por temer represálias da máfia Triads que estaria supostamente envolvida na morte de Bruce Lee). Boatos afirmavam que Baker seria um “atravessador”, dos EUA para Hong Kong, de substâncias ilegais (como esteróides e haxixe) regularmente consumidos por Bruce Lee. Armas de fogo para auto-proteção de Bruce estariam também incluídas e seriam as principais razões porque Baker tinha sido convocado para participar de Fists of Fury. Mas nada disso foi comprovado ou confirmado pelo próprio Baker, se é que alguém teve coragem para perguntá-lo.

Ao contrário de discípulos mais famosos de Bruce Lee como Dan Inosanto, James Yimm Lee, Ted Wong, Richard Bustillo, Taky Kimura, Jesse Glover, Jerry Poteet, Bob Bremer e Tim Tackett, não se ouvia quase nada sobre as atividades de Bob Baker após a morte de Bruce Lee em 1973.
De volta aos EUA, Baker não ousou abrir uma escola comercial de Jeet Kune Do aproveitando a “onda” causada pela morte prematura de seu mestre e amigo. Durante as décadas de 1980 e 1990 ele ensinou apenas para um grupo restrito de pessoas, já que entendia que seus ensinamentos, frutos do aprendizado adquirido ao trabalhar com Bruce e James Lee não se adequariam a uma academia de artes marciais convencional. Para ele a fidelidade aos princípios do Jeet Kune Do era primordial e ele não enxergava com bons olhos as duvidosas variações que estavam ocorrendo nos anos de 1980. Baker posteriormente participou de alguns documentários sobre Bruce Lee.
Howard Williams, da pioneira turma de Oakland na década de 1960, morto em abril de 2012, foi um dos poucos companheiros de Jeet Kune Do mais próximos de Bob, enquanto ainda ensinavam de forma discreta na região de Oakland. Também foram seus discípulos, George Tan (historiador expert sobre a vida de Bruce lee) e o instrutor Roy Cullen. Bob Baker trabalhou também com Greglon Lee, o filho de James Yimm Lee.
Há uma divergência sobre a causa e o ano da morte de Robert Baker, especulou-se entre ataque cardíaco, câncer, derrame cerebral ou cirrose hepática como as causas de sua morte; e entre 1992 e 1994, o ano de seu falecimento. Mas a data e causa da morte mais provável seria em 14 de abril de 1993, na cidade de Los Angeles, estado da Califórnia, EUA, vítima de um ataque cardíaco, aos 53 anos incompletos. Assim, o mais discreto e calado, porém respeitado discípulo de Bruce Lee, partiu sem quase ser notado.
